Case Study
Storyline
The legendary sun-shooting archer vanishes during a mission to rescue the dying sun, prompting Chang Er to embark on a perilous journey to the moon's dark side alongside an earthbound bandit who crash-lands into her world.
Challenges
There is the kind of surrealism on the visual that is hard to let audience believe every sound they heard, hard impacts and touches are deadly towards bringing any natural sense into the movie. Since the movie is visually abstract and high in contrast, the fundamentals or any kinds of sweeteners should be subtle but yet narrative.
Design Solutions
By eliminating most the of the hits and hard touches during foley recording, it reduces the focus on every little sound that pulls them out from the story, instead, we would put our efforts on sound textures that lets the audience feel the atmosphere and material subconsciously, so that even when the sound design is sonically full, it acts a strong support rather than pulling attention.
Impact Metrics
The movie was selected to make its world premiere in the International Competition of the 79th Locarno Film Festival. Quoted by the film review, ‘The overall efforts of sound design and music create a soundscape that fits and occasionally dictates the fragmented approach, both in terms of events and aesthetics.’
