Case Study
Challenges
Retro and paper collage styles are classic combinations, and because of that, creating sounds that matches with the visual style often falls into the category of “Re-Make”. The 80’s and style had an extremely distinct style compared to ones from other decades.
Design Solutions
Old game sound often use synth to make sound effects and that lacks details and textures. Since we are now living in a higher definition era, adding foley details into sound effects makes it real and brings more depth into the texture that fits on screen actions. It is important for NOT to copy what’s been heard from the old days, and it is crucial to be able to bring the analog feeling of sound back into the newly created retro style game. Key is to mimic the voltage fluctuation like the old analog equipment, and that applies to all the sound design cross the entire game.
Impact Metrics
Prominent tech reviewers who evaluated the console highlight it as a standout title for family game nights. According to a hands-on tech review by The Telegraph, the game is described as a "visually lovely trivia game" that successfully merges brainpower with physical exercise. Unlike traditional trivia games where you sit on a couch, reviewers note that What on Earth? gives you a serious workout because you physically have to jump to "buzz in" and answer questions. The game is frequently praised for its charming, vibrant aesthetic and whimsical character selections, proving that family games can be visually arresting without needing 4K powerhouse graphics.
